Question/Topic
BC's enhanced driver's licence (EDL) & enhanced identification card (EIC) for US border crossing
Answer/Article

Commencing June 1, 2009, all Canadians and permanent residents entering the US by land or water must present a valid passport or another WHTI-compliant document. This document can be either a NEXUS card, FAST card or an Enhanced Driver’s Licence (EDL) or Enhanced Identification Card (EIC).

The new EDL or EIC is similar to the current BC driver's license or BC ID card with added features such as: ability to establish your Canadian citizenship, machine readable zone of encoded data similar to a passport that is scanable, and a radio frequency identification technology (RFID) chip that contains the cardholder's EDL information and a RFID tag ID number. Please note that the EDL/EIC is an acceptable document to present when entering the US by land and water only.
