IDE drives (which are also known as ATA or PATA series drives) typically run off the standard IDE driver built in to Microsoft’s Windows operating systems. If you are installing Windows Vista, XP, or 2000 on a single hard disk drive (HDD) then follow the steps listed below.
1. Install the disk drive in your PC per the PC manufacturer’s instructions.
Special note: It is standard procedure for the BIOS in many systems to do an HDD Auto-Detect during bootup. Make sure that the drive you are installing does not exceed the maximum disk drive capacity supported by the computer’s BIOS or it will not recognized the disk drive.
2. If you have an older PC check\set the CD-Rom as the boot device in your system’s BIOS.
3. Insert the Windows operating system setup CD in to the CD-Rom.
4. Boot your PC and follow the onscreen setup steps to complete the installation.
If you are installing a secondary drive either internally or externally then you need to initialize, partition, and format the drive. You will find the following steps in the Windows Help file.
New disks appear as Not Initialized. Before you can use a disk, you must first initialize it. If you start Disk Management after adding a disk, the Initialize Disk Wizard appears so you can initialize the disk. If the Initialize Disk Wizard did not appear then do the following:
-
Go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, and open Computer Management.
-
In the console tree under Storage click on Disk Management.
-
Right-click the disk you want to initialize and then click Initialize Disk.
-
In the Initialize Disk dialog box, select the disk(s) to initialize. The disk is initialized as a basic disk.
-
Right-click an unallocated region of a basic disk and then click New Partition, or right-click free space in an extended partition and then click New Logical Drive.
-
In the New Partition Wizard, click Next, click Primary partition, Extended partition, or Logical drive, and then follow the instructions on your screen.
-
Finally formatting will typically start after the partitioning has completed. However, to manually start the process Right-click the partition, logical drive, or basic volume you want to format (or reformat), and then click Format.
-
Select the options you want and then click OK.
Special note: If the drive does not show up under Disk Management check Device Manager and if the drive is there with a Red X on it then right click on it and select enable driver. If the drive is not listed in Device Manager then check your hardware and power connections.
