Spokane, WA– Global Credit Union’s Darby branch manager, Sharon Carter, was awarded the prestigious Gold President’s Volunteer Service Award for her extraordinary commitment to the Camp Darby community. The award is given to individuals who have completed 500 hours or more of community service over a 12-month period.
The award was presented by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation which was established in 2003 to recognize the valuable contributions volunteers are making in our communities and encourage more people to serve. The Council created the President’s Volunteer service Award program as a way to thank and honor Americans who, by their demonstrated commitment and example, inspire others to engage in volunteer service. Recognizing and honoring volunteers sets a standard for service, encourages a sustained commitment to civic participation, and inspires others to make service a central part of their lives. To date, the President’s Council has partnered with more than 80 Leadership Organizations and more than 28,000 Certifying Organizations to bestow more than 1.5 million awards to the Nation’s deserving volunteers.
Ms. Carter received an official Gold President’s Volunteer Service Award lapel pin, a personalized certificate of achievement, and a congratulatory letter signed by President Obama. In his letter the President said, “In my Inaugural Address, I stated that we need a new era of responsibility—a recognition on the part of every American that we have duties to ourselves, our Nation, and the world. These are duties that we do not grudgingly accept, but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit than giving our all to a difficult task. Your volunteer service demonstrates the kind of commitment to your community that moves America a step closer to its great promise.”
Camp Darby is located in Tirrenia, Italy and is home to 26 Army, Air Force and Department of Defense tenant activities with a permanent population of more than 2,000 people. As reported on the Army homepage www.army.mil, this small installation has many offices that are staffed by only one person; volunteers play an important role in augmenting services resulting in an annual savings to the garrison of nearly $200,000.
Global Credit Union President/CEO, Jack Fallis, applauds the work of Ms. Carter and the award designation, “Ms. Carter has exemplified world-class community service through her ongoing volunteer work, financial education, and active community sponsorship at the installation. We are proud to have Ms. Carter as an integral member of the Global Credit Union team and a true community steward in Darby.” Carter has been with the credit union for 19 years.
