Operating out of the Specialized Housing Resources (SHR) Department of Kentucky Housing Corporation (KHC), the Safe Havens initiative provides temporary housing assistance and self-sufficiency opportunities to households who meet the HUD definition of homelessness. KHC funds Safe Haven through its HOME Tenant Based Rental Assistance allocation and Housing Assistance Fund (HAF).
Safe Havens is composed of two programs:
Safe Start serves domestic violence victims and homeless families with children. Program participants receive a temporary housing voucher, which is available for up to two years. During that time, participants will be transitioned to more permanent housing.
Safe Place provides temporary housing vouchers to individuals with persistent and severe mental illness. The vouchers are available for up to two years, in which KHC and other case management agencies will work to find more stable housing for participants.
