Question/Topic
What is the difference in Project-Based Rental Assistance (PBRA)and Tenant-Based Rental Assistance (TBRA)?
Answer/Article
With tenant-based rental assistance, also called the Housing Choice Voucher Program, the rental subisdy is provided to the tenant, who can then apply to their rent at any property that accepts Section 8 vouchers.  Families are placed on the waiting list according to Housing and Urban Development (HUD) low-income limits and by the number of persons in the household.  To inquire about the income limits in your area, please contact Kathy Sadler in the TBRA Department at 877-552-7368, extension 769.  Your call will then be directed to the correct representative for response.

With project-based rental assistance, the assistance is provided to residents living in certain apartment complexes.  The rental subsidy is tied to the specific complexes; therefore, anyone renting a subsidized unit must meet income and program guidelines to live there.  The rental subsidy does not follow the resident from property to property – he or she only receives this subsidy while residing in the subsidized unit.

Kentucky Housing Corporation (KHC) offers both programs.  To learn more about rental assistance, visit the links below.
