Question/Topic
How does UMP cover surgery?
Answer/Article

ALERT!   Even if your doctor is in the UMP network, the facility or other providers such as anesthesiologists might not be. Make sure you confirm that all of the providers who will participate in your care and the facility are in UMP’s network before you receive services. Non-network providers and facilities can bill you for all charges not paid by UMP, while network providers and facilities agree to accept the payment amounts negotiated by UMP, resulting in significant savings for you.

The plan pays for covered surgical services according to the network status of the provider. The surgeon and other professional providers may bill separately from the facility. See the list of services requiring preauthorization, or call Customer Service at 1-800-762-6004.

If services are inpatient (see definition of "Hospital Inpatient Stay"), you will also pay the inpatient hospital copay for facility charges.

The plan covers the following services as outpatient:

  • Outpatient surgery at a hospital.
  • Surgery and procedures performed at an ambulatory surgery center. Note: Only certain procedures are covered at ambulatory surgery centers.
  • Short-stay obstetric (childbirth) services (released within 24 hours of admission).
