Question/Topic
What is the limit for skilled nursing facility services for Medicare retirees?
Answer/Article

Medicare limits treatment in a skilled nursing facility to 100 days per year. If Medicare is your primary coverage, UMP covers your first 100 days in a skilled nursing facility as your secondary insurer. Those 100 days count toward the 150-day maximum allowed by UMP.

After you have reached your Medicare maximum of 100 days, UMP covers an additional 50 days only if services are preauthorized and medically necessary, and meet Medicare criteria for skilled nursing facility coverage. For UMP to cover the additional 50 days, and before reaching your 100-day Medicare limit, you must:

  • Get skilled nursing services preauthorized by UMP.
  • Enroll in UMP case management (see Related Items below).
