Question/Topic
How does UMP cover diagnostic tests, laboratory services, and X-rays?
Answer/Article

FOR MORE INFORMATION: See "How does UMP cover mammograms?" and "How does UMP cover genetic counseling and testing?"

This benefit covers tests that must be appropriate to the diagnosis or symptoms reported by the ordering provider and must be medically necessary as defined by UMP. Where there are alternative diagnostic approaches with different fees, UMP will cover the least expensive, evidence-based diagnostic method. Covered services include:

  • Colonoscopies for enrollees ages 50 or over: As a routine screening test, UMP covers once every 10 years (see preventive care benefit). All others are covered as a medical benefit.
  • Diagnostic laboratory tests, X-rays (including diagnostic mammograms), and other imaging studies.
  • Electrocardiograms (EKG, ECG).
  • Electroencephalograms (EEG) and similar tests.
  • Pathology exams.
  • Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scans. All PET scans must be preauthorized unless performed for staging related to cancer.
  • Prostate cancer screening as recommended by your provider.
  • Skin allergy testing.

Tests Not Covered by UMP

UMP does not pay for the following tests (this does not list all tests not covered by UMP):

  • Allergy testing through blood or blood products.
  • Carotid Intima Media Thickness testing.
  • Computed Tomographic Colonography (CTC). Also called a virtual colonoscopy.
  • Electron Beam Tomography (EBT), self-referred or prescribed by your provider.
  • Upright Magnetic Resonance Imaging (uMRI): Also known as "positional," "weight-bearing" (partial or full), or "axial loading."
