UMP’s clinical group and medical directors reviewed current standards of care, as well as the recommendations of professional societies and organizations that certify bariatric surgery providers. In developing our criteria for coverage of bariatric surgery, we referenced the standards adopted by the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons.
UMP’s standards are designed to help ensure the least risk and best outcomes for our members. To that end, we reviewed the number of cases performed per year as well as the training, education, and experience of the providers and facility. The facilities selected are designated as a UMP Center of Excellence for bariatric surgery.
Can I select my own surgeon to perform the surgery?
No, not if you want UMP (Classic or CDHP) to cover the surgery. UMP has selected specific Centers of Excellence that meet our criteria and have proven positive outcomes.
Which providers has UMP selected as the Center of Excellence for bariatric surgery?
If you meet UMP’s criteria for surgery, your case manager will work with you to ensure you select the best Center of Excellence provider for your specific medical needs.
Why can't UMP tell me who my doctor will be ahead of time?
Each UMP Center of Excellence accepts only a certain number of patients. If you successfully complete the presurgical program and are approved for surgery, your case manager will work closely with you to ensure that you get the best care for your situation.
