How can I protect myself against identity theft?

How can I protect myself against identity theft?

Here are some simple steps to help protect you from identity theft:

1. Make a photocopy of all of your financial, insurance and personal information and store it in a safe place.  Include all of the phone numbers necessary to report lost or stolen information.  Should you ever lose your wallet or purse, this will be a tremendous help.

2. Always review your account statements for unauthorized or suspicious activity.

3. Order a copy of your credit report at least once a year.  Verify your report is accurate and includes only activities you have authorized.  Call EQUIFAX to order a report 1-800-685-1111.

4. Contact WSECU and any other financial institutions you do business with and ask to have a  “code word” placed on all of your accounts.

5. Give your social security number only when it is absolutely necessary.  Offer another form of identification instead.
