Job Search Expenses That May Be Tax Deductible

Looking for a job can involve a number of expenses at a time when you may be least able to afford them. Some of these costs may be tax-deductible. For guidance, consult a tax advisor or review IRS Publication 529, Miscellaneous Deductions.

In general, the following job-search expenses may qualify for a tax deduction:

  • Resume preparation: Fees for professional resume services, printing, postage, and related costs.
  • Travel: Airfare, mileage, or other travel expenses for interviews in another city or state.
  • Meals: Meal costs that are directly related to your job search.
  • Lodging: Hotel expenses when interviewing away from home.
