“Gray charges” are small, often unnoticed charges that appear on your credit card. They are not outright fraud, but they are usually unwanted, forgotten, or hidden fees that can quietly drain your budget.

Common examples include:

  • Free magazine subscriptions that convert to paid subscriptions
  • Newsletters or services that begin with a free trial
  • Old domain names you forgot you registered
  • Gaming memberships signed up for by children
  • Satellite radio or other services with automatic renewals

These recurring charges often go unnoticed because many people don’t carefully review their credit card statements. Even when they do, they may feel that disputing a small charge isn’t worth the time.

Gray charges can also occur when extra products or services are added to a legitimate purchase, or when a subscription continues to bill you even after you’ve canceled it.

This highlights the importance of reviewing every charge on your credit card statement—especially if you use automatic payments. Small charges add up quickly; a $10 monthly fee becomes $120 a year.

If you spot an unfamiliar charge, contact the merchant or your credit card company. Even small amounts are worth disputing to protect your money.
