Your 60-Day Election Window

Timing is everything with COBRA. You must return your election form within 60 days of your coverage loss or the date your notice was mailed—whichever is later.

Don't Miss the Cutoff
If your election form is not postmarked by Day 60, you waive all rights to continuation coverage.
14 Days: Notice Deadline The plan administrator must send your election notice within 14 days of being notified of your job loss.
60 Days: Election Window You have 60 days from the postmark date to decide. Each family member can decide independently.
45 Days: First Payment Once you elect, you have 45 days to send your first premium payment.
Retroactive Protection: Even if you wait until Day 59 to elect, your coverage is retroactive to the day you lost it. This ensures you have no gap in coverage, provided you pay the full back-premiums.
