Terms of Use
Navigating Social Security disability requires meeting two distinct sets of criteria. If you fail the Technical requirements, your claim is denied immediately, regardless of your medical condition.
The Universal Medical Requirement
The Social Security Administration (SSA) uses a strict definition of "total disability." To qualify, you must prove:
- Duration: Your condition has lasted (or is expected to last) at least 12 months or result in death.
- Severity: You cannot perform the work you did previously (based on a 5-year look-back).
- Adaptability: You cannot adjust to any other type of work in the national economy, considering your age and education.

SGA (Substantial Gainful Activity): If you earn more than this amount per month through work, the SSA generally considers you "not disabled." For statutorily blind individuals, the 2026 limit is $2,830.
Key 2026 Income Exclusions (SSI Only)
When calculating your SSI payment, the SSA does not count:
- The first $20 of most monthly income.
- The first $65 of earned wages, plus 50% of any wages over $65.
- IRWE: Wages used for "Impairment-Related Work Expenses" (e.g., specialized transport, wheelchairs).
- Student Limit: For students under 22, the 2026 exclusion is $2,410/mo (up to $9,730/yr).
How to Apply: Preparation Checklist
The process typically takes 3 to 7 months. Prepare these three "buckets" of information to avoid delays:
- Medical Evidence: A complete list of doctors, clinics, and hospitals. Include specific treatment dates, medication names, and your "Blue Book" impairment category if known.
- 5-Year Work History: Details on job duties, physical requirements (lifting, standing), and mental demands for all roles held since 2021.
- Financial Records: Recent bank statements and tax returns. For SSI, you must also document "in-kind" support (e.g., if someone provides you free room and board).
