Terms of Use

COBRA is designed to be a temporary bridge. The length of time you can remain on the plan is determined by the specific event that caused the loss of coverage.

Qualifying Event Max Duration
Termination or Reduced Hours 18 Months
SSA-Certified Disability 29 Months
Divorce, Death, or Loss of Dependent Status 36 Months

Warning: Coverage Can End Early

Your COBRA rights are forfeited immediately if you fail to pay premiums on time, if your former employer stops offering group insurance to everyone, or if you become eligible for Medicare after electing COBRA.

The 180-Day Rule: If your plan offers a "conversion option," they must notify you at least 180 days before your COBRA expires. This allows you to move to an individual policy without a gap, though Marketplace plans are often more affordable in today's market.
