The PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) is a standardized assessment co-sponsored by the College Board and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). It serves two main purposes: providing practice for the SAT and determining eligibility for National Merit Scholarship recognition.
What the PSAT/NMSQT Measures
The PSAT/NMSQT evaluates the reading, writing, and math skills students develop throughout their academic experience. The digital test focuses on:
- Reading and Writing — comprehension, analysis, grammar, and editing skills
- Math — problem-solving, algebra, data analysis, and geometry
The test does not measure creativity, motivation, or other personal qualities that colleges value, but it does provide insight into your academic strengths.
Digital Format
As of 2023, the PSAT/NMSQT is administered entirely in a digital, adaptive format. Students take the test on a computer using the College Board’s Bluebook™ app, which also provides official practice materials.
Score Reports
Score reports are no longer mailed. Students access their results online through their College Board accounts, typically a few weeks after the test date. Schools receive summary information electronically.
