Why was Same Day ACH (SDA) created?

Same Day ACH (SDA) was created based on the industry’s need to process payments faster. There are a variety of companies and agencies that use same day ACH, including financial institutions, government agencies, payment providers, P2P and bill pay providers, payroll companies, and businesses.

SDA changes will occur in three phases over the next three years. This gives financial institutions and service providers time to modify their processes to comply with new ACH rules.

The phases are:

  • Phase 1: financial institutions will process SDA credits (deposits) by the end of their processing day. (9/23/2016)
  • Phase 2: financial institutions will process SDA debits by the end of their processing day. (9/15/2017)
  • Phase 3: financial institutions will process both SDA credits/deposits and debits by 5PM. (3/16/2018)
