How to prevent insurance fraud

During a disaster, it’s important to be aware of people who may be perpetuating a fraud or scams in an attempt to gain access to your money or personal account information. Be on the lookout for these red flags:

  • Someone claims your recent insurance payment was not made, and if you don’t act immediately, your property will not be covered. They may ask for your account number, routing number, and other personal information.

  • Someone who claims to be from your insurance company asks you to purchase gift cards or send money to them via Western Union or MoneyGram.

  • You receive an insurance check in the mail but never made a claim.

If you think you may have fallen victim to a scam, call your insurance company or agent immediately. If you have given out your account information, contact Redwood Credit Union at 1 (800) 479-7928 or (707) 545-4000 to speak with a member service representative.
