Why did I receive a notice telling me that you’ll send my money to the state if I don’t contact you?

The State of California (like all other states) requires that if your account is dormant (meaning that you’ve performed no transactions) for 3 years, your funds must be sent to the State as unclaimed property. The State then holds the funds in trust for you until you claim it. This process is known as “escheatment”. Before your account is escheated, we send a notice to you to warn you of the impending escheatment in order to encourage you to re-activate your account. If you do contact us after receiving the notice, we will re-activate your account, which will prevent it from escheating to the state.
