The 6 Pillars of Auto Protection
A standard policy is a combination of these six distinct coverages. Some are required by law, while others are required by your bank if you have a loan.
1. Bodily Injury Covers injuries you cause to others. This is your primary defense against lawsuits.
2. PIP / MedPay Covers medical bills and lost wages for you and your passengers, regardless of fault.
3. Property Damage Pays for repairs to other cars, fences, or structures you hit with your vehicle.
4. Collision Reimburses you for damage to your own car after a crash or a rollover.
5. Comprehensive Covers non-crash damage: theft, fire, animal strikes, and weather-related events.
6. UM / UIM Protects you if the person who hits you has no insurance or carries low limits.
Check Your Loan Agreement: While states only require the "Liability" portions (1 and 3), almost all lenders require "Full Coverage" (Collision and Comprehensive) until your car is paid off.
