Terms of Use

While 18 months is the standard "bridge," federal law allows for longer durations if specific life changes occur during your initial coverage period.

Disability Extension

Extends coverage to 29 months if the SSA determines a beneficiary was disabled within the first 60 days of COBRA.

  • Must notify plan within 60 days of SSA ruling.
  • Must notify plan before Month 18 ends.
Second Event Extension

Extends coverage to 36 months for dependents if a second event occurs (like divorce or death of the employee).

  • Applies to spouse and children only.
  • Must occur during the initial 18-month window.
Premium Note: For the disability extension (months 19–29), the plan administrator is allowed to charge up to 150% of the total plan cost, rather than the usual 102%.
