What to Do if a Settlement is Too Low

Don't feel pressured to sign the first check. If you believe your car is worth more or your injuries are more severe, use this escalation path.

Step 1: Evidence Gathering

Collect three independent repair estimates or "sold" listings of similar vehicles in your area. Submit these to the Claims Manager as "New Information" for your file.

Step 2: The Appraisal Clause

Check your policy for the Appraisal Provision. This allows you to hire your own expert to negotiate directly with the company's expert, bypassing the adjuster entirely.

Step 3: External Mediation

Contact these resources if the internal appeal fails:

I.I.I. Helpline (Insurance Information Institute)
1-800-942-4242
American Arbitration Association

Post-Settlement Tip: Once resolved, review your coverage. If this process was difficult, it may be time to switch to a carrier with a higher Customer Satisfaction Rating or a lower Complaint Ratio.
